Design challenge

How can we add a new experience to the Wereldmuseum for local residents to share their cultural background, fostering a more positive experience and strengthening their connection to the neighborhood?

Research

Problem Analysis

During our assignment for Het Wereldmuseum, we identified several key challenges. Through discussions with the client and additional research, we visualized the issues using the Fishbone Method. This approach helped us map the underlying causes of the problems.

Findings

Pandemic
Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic
Visitor numbers dropped significantly during the pandemic and remain below pre-2019 levels. Larger museums have recovered faster, suggesting a structural issue in regaining visitors.

Brand Awareness
The museum rebranded from Tropenmuseum to Wereldmuseum on October 4, 2023, to emphasize inclusivity and global focus. However, poor communication means many still associate it with its old name, limiting visibility and appeal.

Spatial Layout
The museum lacks a clear layout, leaving visitors unguided. While intentional, this can cause confusion and lower engagement compared to other museums with more intuitive navigation.

Proposition

"Neighborhood Stories"
We proposed a temporary exhibition where local residents contribute personal artifacts and stories representing their cultural heritage. This "Neighborhood Stories" exhibit highlights the diversity of the surrounding community, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual appreciation.

Features

Invitations personalized for local residents, delivered as postcards with a QR code for participation.

User-generated content (UGC) shared on social media to amplify visibility and engagement.

A welcoming launch event with cultural tastings and storytelling.

Prototype Overview

The "Neighborhood Stories" prototype combines a physical invitation and a digital platform to engage the community effectively.

Physical Invitation
Postcard Design: Easy to distribute and creates a personal connection.
QR Code: Directs recipients to a dedicated landing page.
Goal: Encourage participation and build a welcoming atmosphere.

Digital Landing Page
This landing page was designed for Wereldmuseum Amsterdam to promote a unique community-driven exhibition where local visitors can share personal artifacts and stories or simply explore the exhibition as attendees.

This landing page was created for Wereldmuseum Amsterdam to promote a special exhibition where community stories take center stage. The design focuses on two distinct audiences through clear and intentional call-to-actions. Visitors who wish to contribute an artifact can easily access a dedicated registration form via the prominent “Ik neem een voorwerp mee” button. For those who simply wish to visit and explore the exhibition without contributing an artifact, the “Ik registreer me als bezoeker” button leads to a separate registration form.
By providing these two pathways, the landing page ensures a seamless experience for both groups of visitors.

Artefact Registration Form – Wereldmuseum Amsterdam
TThis form allows visitors to contribute an artifact to the exhibition. Participants are required to upload an image and provide a brief description of the object to illustrate what they plan to bring.

This helps the museum assess the artifact's relevance and gives them the opportunity to decline items that may not fit the exhibition. Users can also indicate whether they wish to leave the artifact at the museum or take it home after the event. Contact details and clear privacy terms ensure a smooth and transparent process.
